The continuation of the successful zombie survival series State of Decay is apparently taking much longer to arrive than previously expected.
Right off the bat, State of Decay turned out to be an absolute surprise success at the time, which was followed by the sequel State of Decay 2. Expectations for State of Decay 3, which has been announced for a long time, are correspondingly high, but it now appears to be taking much longer to arrive than previously expected.
Microsoft previously wanted to publish the sequel to the survival series in 2025, but it is now becoming clear that nothing will come of it. According to one of the best-known Microsoft insiders, the potential PC and Xbox hit will probably not appear until 2026 at the earliest.
This refers to Jez Corden, who is considered to be well connected and very reliable in Microsoft circles. This stated in its annual financial statementsXB2 PodcastsNow for the best thing, State of Decay 3 is basically closer to completion than many would expect, but Microsoft is still aiming for a release of the open-world shooter at the beginning of 2026.
State of Decay 3 was originally confirmed at the Xbox Games Showcase in 2020. In addition to Undead Labs, two other Xbox studios, The Coalition (Gears of War) and the RPG experts from Obsidian Entertainment, are supporting the development. The Coalition is intended to be of help primarily because of its experience with Unreal Engine 5.
Side note: In the same podcast, Corden also addresses rumors of a remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and confirms that the RPG remake will probably be released in 2025.
As part of the Summer Game Fest, Microsoft released a new trailer for State of Decay 3. You can watch it here!
