With the new update, PlayStation Portal gets a function that many people wanted at launch

It's been a good year since Sony released a controller-handheld hybrid with PlayStation Portal. It worked as a “normal” additional input device on a PlayStation 5, but could also stream PS5 games via the cloud. The big restriction: The streamed games had to be installed on your own PS5.

At that time, many wanted a “real” cloud streaming function that also worked independently of the console. And this wish has now been granted. Because Sony released an update for the device this Wednesday (November 20th) that makes exactly that possible.

This is what you need to know about the Cloud Streaming Beta on PlayStation Portal

The latest update adds a beta version of cloud streaming to PlayStation Portal, letting you stream select games from the PS Plus games library to the device.

Which games are these?According to Sony, there are over 120 titles available for the feature, including approximatelyand.

What are the requirements? In addition to the device, you need a PSN account and a PS Plus Premium membership. Essential and Extra subscribers cannot use the feature. In addition, your broadband internet requires a minimum performance of 5 Mbps for uploads and downloads.

Depending on how strong your connection is, streaming with up to 1080p resolution and 60 fps should be possible. In order to use the cloud streaming beta, you must first activate it. You can find the option in the settings near the “Cloud Streaming (Beta)” button.

Emphasis on beta status and additional audio features

Sony underlines inBlog entry published for the updateHowever, the function is in beta status, which is why not all features, including party voice chats or 3D audio, cannot be used.

The Cloud Streaming Beta is clearly the star of the new update, but the patch adds even more features. The speaker audio output can now be adjusted to reduce the volume even when the level is at the lowest level. And the audio settings of your PS5 can now be regulated via PlayStation Portal - provided the corresponding console is linked to the device.

What do you think of the new features for PlayStation Portal? Does this make the device more interesting for you?
