Is there still hope that PS3 classics can be played on the current PlayStation 5 in the future? At least a new emulation option should now be tested thoroughly.
Implicit conversions are probably not familiar to everyone. This is a development studio that is responsible for some of the PlayStation ports as part of the PS Plus Classics. Now that same studio is supposed to provide new hope that PS3 classics can still be played by the masses on the PlayStation 5.
As a reminder: The PlayStation 5 is backwards compatible, but only with the games from its direct predecessor, the PlayStation 4. Older titles from the times of the PS1, PS2 and PSP came to the current platform via the aforementioned Classics catalog via PS Plus.
While some PS3 top titles such as God of War 3 were also implemented for the PS4, the vast majority of games from this era remained unplayable on the PlayStation 5. This is due to the idiosyncratic CELL processor that was used on the PS3 and which more or less limited the games of this generation to the native platform - at least so far.
Implicit Conversions has now published its Syrup Engine roadmap for 2025 and beyond, and part of that roadmap includes the development and testing of a possible PS3 emulator for the Syrup engine. If the venture actually succeeds, PS3 titles could still be emulated and played on the PS5.
However, it is currently the case that Implicit Conversions is currently dreaming of such a possibility and is currently already at an advanced stage of development. Accordingly, it could take years before such an emulation option can actually be implemented. Either way: fans of classics from this PlayStation era should be happy that something seems to be happening again on this front. Will the whole thing succeed? Of course we will keep you updated!
Sony has released a fresh trailer that will bring you closer to the PS5 games planned for 2025.
