Ghost of Yotei to Woke because of a protagonist? Developer Sucker Punch on Diversity, Humanity and Outsider

As soon as a sequel suddenly introduces a female main character, there is a small group of people who start "Wooooke !!" to scream. The developers of Sucker Punch were in an interview withVarietyfaced with exactly this statement.

A woman as a revenge spirit fits perfectly for Sucker Punch

First, the co-creative director Jason Connell and Nate Fox give insights into the protagonist. You get to know Attsu early in the game. "She suffers a terrible loss in her youth and then breaks down to a revenge campaign. Revenge is a classic motif of the samurai cinema and we love samurai cinema," explain the co-creative director. Atsu will chase the YOTEI SIX and her motif is revenge.

At some point, people start thinking them to be more than an ordinary person. She is known as Onryō as a revenge spirit from old stories. Is such a spirit really relevant whether it is a man or a woman? Apparently already for some people.

For Sucker Punch, a female main character for Ghost of Yotei was simply the right choice. "We want to continue that is fresh and yet familiar," says Conell. According to Fox, it is easy to present ATSU as an outsider in this environment. "This is a rather dangerous environment and it is ideal for this. You wouldn't trust her so much power, and yet it is on this exuberant revenge campaign, which is probably quite unexpected for some."

In addition, the vengeance of the Japanese folklore are often female figures. So it also fits mythological and historical.

Hokkaido is also a place that does not occur particularly often in entertainment media, although it is definitely a popular travel destination. The team "Humanity with which one can identify" is also particularly important. "We would like to make sure these characters are people with whom you can identify, even if you get to know someone who lived hundreds of years ago," says Fox.

This goal of authenticity also applies to protagonist Atsu.
