What is the reason for the popular “Prismatic Evolutions” set being sold out? We checked exclusively with the seller!

The new set“Prismatic Developments” is already causing a sensation before its official release on January 17, 2025. Fans are desperately trying to get their hands on boxes and booster packs - but in many places the (digital) shelves are empty or the products are being traded at horrendous prices on the secondary market. Why is the set already hard to get? We spoke exclusively to Card-Corner, one of the largest German retailers for Pokémon cards. He clears up myths and gives hope for supplies.

Pokémon Prismatic Evolutions – Eevee creates hype and expensive cards

Im Interview:The Eevee developments such as Nachtara, Psiana and Co. are the focus of “Prismatic Developments”. So it's no wonder that the set is a highlight for collectors and players alike. But what else makes it so desirable? We're already involved in the in-gameworked together. This time Marvin gives us an exclusive interview to answer our questions.

“The Eeveelutions are of course a huge factor. In addition, “Prismatic Developments” is a special set. We also had a long dry spell when it came to exciting sets. Now we finally have something everyone can look forward to.”

He adds: “The design of the cards is simply fantastic. Psiana's alternative artwork in particular is a real highlight“. The chic onePrismatic Evolutions Map Listyou can find it here.

AtHype-technically long ebb. Can Prismatic Evolutions compete with heavy-face sets like 151 or Evolving Skies? Marvin is convinced:

““Prismatic Developments” is in no way inferior to the hype of “151”. Limited editions, popular cards and special products – that always works. When I open it, I think it’s even more fun than “Changing the Dragon” because the frustration rate was often very high there.”

The combination of the popular Eeveelutions and the high-quality design of the cards in particular contributes to the success. Marvin adds: “Anyone who opens the set will hardly be disappointed. The chance of pulling off real highlights is simply higher with a special set like this“. But that's where we - or more precisely the customers - come to the problem: opening the set is not that easy.

Pokémon Prismatic Evolutions sold out or expensive – these are the reasons

Many fans are wondering why the set is so difficult or expensive to get even before its release. Is it the Pokémon that print the cards, is it the wholesalers or is it the “evil” investors who buy up everything like a scalper?

This is what the expert says:Unfortunately, Marvin doesn't have an easy answer for Pokémon card collectors. He gives deep insights: “Global hype and limited availability play a big role. The supply can hardly meet the demand. In addition, several entities – from wholesalers to shops – want to earn their share.“

And what about the theory that Pokémon is intentionally printing fewer cards to increase hype? The expert thinks this is a myth:

“There are different pressure waves, and popular sets get more and more replenished over time. The shortage is caused more by the instances in the sales chain. But of course I understand that it’s frustrating for fans when they see empty shelves.”

Didn't come away empty-handed at Prismatic Developments? You can do that

Keep patience: Marvin advises waiting for supplies. The set will be available in additional waves in the coming months. By the way, not all products from “Prismatic Development” are directly available. The special set will receive new collections until March 2025.

For fans worried about availability, he adds: “Our priority is to satisfy the customer. It really breaks my heart when someone orders and we can't guarantee delivery. We are working hard to provide supplies as quickly as possible.“

“Patience is important. There will be further waves of pressure, and in the future everyone should enjoy “Prismatic Developments”.

What's your insider tip on set?“I particularly recommend the folder collections: 5 boosters and a binder for your cards - you can't go wrong with that. If you like something more unusual, you should take a look at the surprise box.” So it doesn’t always have to be the top trainer boxes that are currently (over)expensive at 100-150 euros.

Pokérmon Cards: Collectors vs. Investors vs. Dealers

Another topic of conversation was the increasing use of Pokémon cards as an investment. Marvin is ambivalent about this: He emphasizes that Pokémon cards are primarily an emotional hobby.“There should always be room for collectors and players who love cards and aren't just hoping for value increases. But as long as everyone behaves fairly, the investor side is also legitimate.“

“I’m a big fan of opening up. The emotions are lost if the products are simply stored in the cellar. But I think it’s completely okay to display sealed products – the top trainer boxes in particular look really great.”

Do traders make more profit with hype sets?Dealers are finally earning more from the new “Prismatic Evolutions” set after often being unable to get much out of weak sets. Marvin explains: “Just as consumers had a dry spell, shops also had to sell products with extremely low margins in order to get rid of anything.” So now they are benefiting from the fact that the set is in extremely high demand. Sure, it's annoying for fans, but after lean times, retailers can have a piece of the hype cake again, as long as it remains fair.
