In the near future, Sony PlayStation could be back in the market for handheld consoles, according to a current report from the siteBloombergout. After the PSP and PS Vita, Sony would once again give Nintendo more competition in the mobile console market and continue what began last year with the PlayStation Portal.
The most important information at a glance:
- Competitive product to the Nintendo Switch
- In early phase of development
- Play PS5 games on the go
PlayStation competition for Nintendo Switch
Where does the information come from?? The rumor comes from unspecified sources in the news magazine Bloomberg and was not commented on further when asked by Sony.
According to the report, Sony wants to expand its reach in the market for handheld consoles with a new handheld in order to, among other things, appear as a competitor alongside Nintendo. But it's not just Nintendo that's the goal. Microsoft also recently confirmed work on an Xbox handheld:
PlayStation Portal as a model
The model for the new PlayStation handheld will also be the one released in 2023, which allows PS5 games to be played over the Internet.
Interesting:According to the report, the PS Portal was originally intended to come onto the market as a standalone device that would work without owning the PS5, similar to Valve's Steam Deck.
With the new handheld, Sony could now realize the idea of a standalone handheld to play current PlayStation games such as those on the PS5. However, as with the confirmed Xbox handheld, it will probably be some time before the portable console appears. We are talking about an early stage of development.

The market for gaming handhelds has been booming for years, and not just thanks to the Nintendo Switch and Valve's Steam Deck. It's no surprise that Microsoft and, according to the Bloomberg report, Sony also want a piece of the big picture.
When it comes to Sony and handhelds, many people remember the PS Vita flop, but Sony was previously extremely successful with the PSP. The PlayStation Portal also recently made it clear that the topic of mobile consoles is far from being a closed issue for Sony.
As is well known, competition stimulates business and the idea of a powerful handheld with which we can play our current PlayStation games on the go sounds tempting.
A new gaming handheld from Sony? Would you look forward to it and how do you see the current development on the handheld market?
