I didn't see that coming Nintendo fans buy new Switch games, but get empty cases with googly eyes

Googly eyes are actually a great thing - but not when they take the place of great games.

Imagine receiving a present for Christmas, unpacking it and being really happy about the latest Zelda or Super Mario for your Nintendo Switch. In the evening you sit down on the couch, tear the foil off the cover and want to grab the cartridge, but all that awaits you inside is an... eye?

According to various reports, many people have experienced something similar in the last few days and weeks. Some reports even go back to summer 2023. The claim: Instead of the games, those affected found googly eyes in the previously sealed cases.

Brazen fraud or viral prank?

That's what it's about:On social media, various people are sharing the above scenario. Whether given as a gift or previously bought yourself - after opening the packaging, instead of the switch cartridge, you will find a wobbly eye in the small holder of the game case.

The small plastic part is probably not just sitting there to taunt unsuspecting players, as it almost perfectly simulates the familiar clacking sound of a Switch cartridge when you shake the case. In this way, those responsible ensure that the fraud is only discovered as late as possible.

Those affected all report that the packaging was still shrink-wrapped, and the games were also purchased in various stores such as Walmart, Best Buy or Target. After all, the phenomenon seems to be spreadingWestern USAto concentrate.

Some people even report that - since they had heard about it before - they opened packs directly in the stores and in front of the employees and were also met with the gawking surprise there.

Rebekah Valentine from IGN took a closer look at the matter and contacted those affected in the USA. In hersdetailed article (via IGN)She reported on the conversations and also explained what insights she gained from inquiries in the relevant stores.

None of those affected were able to clearly prove the incident in question - for example through a video recording - which is of course ultimately not surprising. But some were at least able to provide suitable return slips.

There were no clear answers in the stores either, although this was also due to the fact that most of the responses were not received until the post was published. Nintendo itself also did not comment to IGN.

This means that it cannot be proven beyond doubt whether this is a widespread fraud that may be taking place somewhere in the supply chain or an Internet prank from the community. If we look at the reports and discussions under the posts, the whole thing seems quite credible.

Meanwhile, the announcement of the Switch 2 is only a matter of time and new rumors and leaks are now finding their way onto the Internet every day. The topic of Nintendo will be discussed a lot in the coming days and weeks, even beyond the nasty googly eyes.
