Sony is secretly introducing major innovations for a PS5 accessory that we no longer expected

Sony is finally making up for a previously missing VR technology.

Sony also regularly releases peripherals for the PS5 that expand the gaming experience. The PlayStation VR 2, which you need to play VR games on the console, was also released at the beginning of 2023. However, it seems to have sold so poorly that the last time it was sold was in Marchbecame.

This makes it all the more surprising that Sony has now revealed a pretty big new feature for the PSVR 2 - but in a way that almost no one would have noticed.

PSVR 2 now gets hand tracking

To be more precise, the new feature is so-called hand tracking: the ability to control inputs exclusively using your own hands instead of having to resort to the controller.

To do this, your hands simply need to be within the field of view of the cameras that are integrated into the PSVR 2 headset. You can see what this looks like in the video here, in which the hands of the person playing are transferred directly into the game as water pistols:

Controllers certainly serve an important function with their easy access to buttons, but hand tracking feels much more intuitive and natural, especially for VR. This means that many movements do not have to be converted into button prompts.

This technology is already used in other headsets such as the Meta Quest 3 or HTC Vive, but we have had to do without it on PlayStation so far.

However, Sony has by no means made a big deal about the innovation– instead, it can simply be found as a description on Sony's booth at the Siggraph 2024 Asia Computer Graphics & Interactive Tech Expo in Tokyo. (viaUploadVR)

Metro Awakening, a PSVR 2 game for action and horror fans, was released a few weeks ago:

As can also be seen from the description at Sony's stand, the feature should already be available with "the latest SDK [Software Development Kit, editor's note] of the PlayStation 5". This effectively means that developers can now integrate it into their games.

We can only hope that there will be a few new game highlights on the PSVR 2 in the future, of which there are far too few on the hardware so far.
