Former developers of The Witcher 3 have now presented their latest RPG project in more detail, The Blood of Dawnwalker. The title was previously announced, but now there are more details.
Rebel Wolves is a development studio that consists of several employees who previously worked on the successful The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt from CD Projekt RED. Among other things, ex-director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz is in charge as co-founder - and the expectations for the recently announced The Blood of Dawnwalker are correspondingly high. While many details were left open back then, the action role-playing game has now been presented in more detail via stream for the first time.
The title, published by Bandai Namco, is set in the Middle Ages of the 14th century, but in an alternative form. Powerful lords here have been ousted by a group of vampires, while conflict and plague continue to plague the land. The population has been decimated and is fighting for survival.
In Vale Sangora, somewhere in the Carpathian mountains, the vampires come out of hiding and seize the chance to overthrow those in power and take back their freedom. Legends become reality and history will never be the same again.
The "first chapter" of the dark fantasy saga, which is obviously designed to consist of several parts, is seen as a narrative sandbox game in which you should write your own stories through the decisions you make. You take on the role of the young man Coen, who is transformed into a Dawnwalker. This means that he is neither human nor fully vampire. He has 30 days and nights left to save his family and take revenge on the person responsible for his condition.
The action role-playing game should be characterized above all by a great deal of freedom of choice. Depending on the time of day, different skills and stories are available to you. You always have the choice: Do you fight to save humanity or do you give yourself completely to the dark forces?
Tamszkiewicz, the game's game director, said at the launch: "Inspired by classic RPGs, we wanted to build a sense of urgency into an open-world game. There are different approaches to saving Coen's family, with no clear separation between main ones - and side quests. The players can decide for themselves how they want to use their time in the game. Time is a resource and as the game progresses, possible paths open or close Days to discover all the stories and secrets, which makes each playthrough unique. We call this the narrative sandbox.
Along with the performance, a first cinematic trailer was released, featuring the protagonist Coen, his sister Lunka and a group of vampires led by Lord Brencis. The video takes place two years before the events of the game itself.
Technically, the developers of Rebel Wolves rely on the current Unreal Engine 5. The Blood of Dawnwalker is scheduled to be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, but there is currently no release date. There will be more information in the coming months, including a deeper look at the actual gameplay in summer 2025.
