What the popularity explains to this day
Nvidia's Shield TV Pro should still be so popular because of three aspects, even though it was released at the end of 2019:
- From today's perspective, it is still a powerful streaming box with the support of the 4K resolution with up to 60 Hertz, even if it is trumped in certain points such as the amount of RAM by new media players (more on this).
- Shield TV Pro offers a large amount of functions, including the stream of games via GeForce Now, wide support for video standards, comparatively large number of connections and other extras such as the AI-upscaling of videos.
- Hardly any device comes to the Shield TV Pro when it comes to supporting audio decoders such as Dolby Digital Plus and DTS HD Master Audio.
However, whether this justifies the stable high price of around 220 euros depends heavily on whether you really need all of these functions.
Regardless of this, it can be said that Nvidia's Shield TV Pro 2019 is also a powerful all -rounder for the living room from today's perspective, but it also has disadvantages.
The biggest disadvantages
Almost six years do not miss Nvidia hardware without a trace. This shows the following overview of disadvantages compared to current media players in the case of the Shield TV Pro 2019:
- Alte Android-Version:NVIDIA still supplies the Shield TV Pro 2019 with updates, for example, only in February 2025 with theVersion 9.2 The Shield Experience Software. However, Android 11 remains the basis, while Android 14 is the latest version in the TV area.
- Twice less memory:With 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage space, the Shield TV Pro has less than the current competition. For example, Apple TV offers a combination of 4 GB and 128 GB, Google's TV Streamer has 4 GB and 32 GB.
- An increasingly important codec is missing:Modern streaming boxes dominate the AV1 codec, which is increasingly being used by platforms such as YouTube. On the other hand, Shield TV Pro 2019 does not offer any support from the hardware.
There are other aspects that, in our view, are less important, more precisely, HDMI 2.0 instead of HDMI 2.1, WiFi 5 instead of WiFi 6 and no support from HDR10+.
Is Shield TV Pro 2019 still worth it today?
Basically yes, if you need the variety of functions and can live with the certain risk of the lack of support for the AV1 codec and the still high price.
As the list to be seen at the beginning, there are many more current alternatives that also cut a very good figure in the living room.
Will there be a successor? We think that is very unlikely, despite the still very popular popularity of the Shield TV Pro. We also sent Nvidia an inquiry. If we receive specific feedback, we update this article accordingly.
Have we overlooked an important advantage or disadvantage of the Shield Box? Do you use the device to this day or do you have a different recommendation for the living room? Feel free to write it in the comments!
