RGB lighting, new analogsticks and more: I converted the Steam Deck Oled and a mod is particularly worthwhile

The Steam Deck Oled is still one of the best gaming handhelds you can buy in 2025. Although the device does not quite bring the same raw performance, as some of its rivals with Windows, but benefits from direct support from Valve, shines with an excellent OLED screen, offers a console-like experience and an excellent price-performance ratio.

If you want to make the handheld even better or simply adapt it individually to your taste, then the installation of mods or other accessories could be worthwhile for you. I installed six mods for you with a brand new Steam Deck OLED - and one is particularly worth it.

Transparency note: Decky.netthe Steam Deck OLED and the accessories shown here for test purposes made me available to me free of charge. Valve and Dildy.net had no influence on the content of the article and did not get an insight before the article appeared. There was no obligation to publish.

Steam Deck OLED: Which accessories did I install?

Jsaux transparente RGB-Backplate:This is a transparent back for your Steam Deck OLED with built-in RGB lighting. The backplate has a separate battery that is charged with USB-C. In addition, it offers better cooling because another fan grill was placed directly above the fan of the handheld.

Gulikit Steam Deck Hall effect joysticks:These analog sticks use magnets to determine their position. There is significantly less mechanical wear, which makes it particularly durable and resistant to stick drift. This also allows you to do more precision with smaller onesto play.

Extremerate Clicky-Button-Kit:With here you can equip for the ABXY keys and the D-Pad with micro-switches. They are then not only heard and noticeable, but also more precise because you know exactly when the button triggered.

Extremed reciprocal increase:These are small rubber pads that should increase the buttons on the back a little and make it more ergonomic.

Spigen Glastr EZ Fit protective glass:A protective glass with a hardness of 9 hours. The special feature of this is a framework that should make the attachment particularly easy.

Decky Trackpad-Kekins:Small sticky skins for the Trackpads of the Steam Deck. They offer fine texturation.

It was so light (or difficult)

Before you open your Steam Deck, you have to do two things:Remove the microSD card because it can break through when opening. And activate the "Battery Storage Mode". This deactivates the battery by your Steam Deck and next time it will only be switched on with a power cable. Then you proceed as follows:

  1. Drive down your Steam Deck.
  2. Removes the microSD card.
  3. Hold down the volume button and then press the power button.
  4. Let go both buttons.
  5. Select "Setup Utility".
  6. Navigates with the D-Pad to the menu item »Power«
  7. Activates the "Battery Storage Mode".

Jsaux transparente RGB-Backplate:To my surprise, the installation of this backplate is incredibly easy and can really be done by everyone. The necessary tool is already included in the scope of delivery:

  • RGB-Backplate
  • Silicone handles for the Steam Deck Oled
  • Rubber gloves
  • Replacement buttons for the back
  • Tools and screws

You just have to remove the old backplate, with the new one stick a sticker for a heat conductor. Then you can simply install the new backplate like the old one.

The LEDs have their own battery and are not connected to the Steam Deck. With a button on the back you can switch the lighting on and off or change the color. Under this there is a USB-C connection with which you can recharge the LEDs.

On the back there is the button for controlling the lighting and below the USB-C connection for charging. (Image source: Duy Linh Dinh/Gamestar Tech)

Gulikit Steam Deck Hall effect joysticks:The installation is also extremely easy. After you open the Steam Deck, you have access to the two analog sticks directly. You just have to loosen three screws and a flat tape cable. These even have small tabs on the Steam Deck so that you can grasp and pull them better. Line is not necessary. The installation is done in a few minutes.

Extremerate Clicky-Button-Kit:Of all mods shown here, this is definitely the most difficult and time -consuming. You have to solve the PCB of the controller so that you can get to the membrane switch of the buttons. What you need to consider:

  • The trigger keys must be removed for this process. To do this, they have to be pulled out of a plastic hinge with a little strength. Here you should proceed vigorously and yet carefully so that nothing breaks off.
  • The old contacts for the keys are on a sticker that is best replaced with heat. I used a hair dryer and it worked well.
  • The process is not particularly heavy, but still requires some tact, because it is handling small screws, flat band cables and parts.

Extremed reciprocal increase:The installation is extremely simple because the increases only have to be glued on. You just have to note not to put them off, otherwise the rubber will get stuck on the housing and your button blocks.

Spigen Glastr EZ Fit protective glass:Thanks to the included frame, the attachment of this protective glass is extremely easy. Air bubbles are reliably removed with the supplied tool. The glass makes a high -quality impression and does not affect the brilliant display of the Steam Deck Oled.

Decky Trackpad-Kekins:These just have to be glued to your trackpads. To be honest, I see little or no benefit, even if the stickers have a fine texture. For this they look really chic and offer you an additional way to adapt your Steam deck of your taste.

What was worth it? My recommendation

The best of these upgrades is the extreme clicky button kit.The keys and the D-Pad simply feel much more precise and it is really fun to press them. A real gamuchanger. Playing fighting games or other games that use the D-Pad is much more fun. Unfortunately, this mod is a little more difficult to install.

The backplate with RGB lighting looks chic and is easy to assemble. The supplied silicone handles even act as a diffuser for the LEDs. These seem through a soft light. If the look appeals to you, you will be happy to access.

The Gulikit Hall effect joysticks are unfortunately neither good nor bad. They are easy to install and offer better durability, but they have a disadvantage that could be a dealbreaker for some:

  • The analog stick moves in a circle that is limited by the frame of the housing. With the standard steam joysticks, the identification limits are set so that they are within this circle.
  • With the Gulikit joysticks, on the other hand, the borders are square, which means that they go beyond the physically accessible edges into the diagonals. This means that the stick in diagonal movements already indicates the maximum in about 80 percent of the actual deflection, which is frustrated in games if you expect the same precision in all directions.
  • It didn't bother me personally, but I can imagine that complex 3D platformers will be a challenge.
  • Unfortunately, there is no native way in Steamos to adapt the outer dead zone of the diagonals.

In the right picture you can see that the Gulikit analog sticks in the diagonals go well over 100 percent. This ensures that the diagonals perceive a complete input in about 80 percent of the physical path. (Image source: Duy Linh Dinh/Gamestar Tech)

Die Extremed reciprocal increase can be worthwhileEspecially when you use the silicone handles of the RGB backplate. So the keys are a little easier to reach and not so deep in the housing.

For me, protective glass is part of the standard equipment. The Spigen that I installed here could be particularly easy to attach.

The trackpad skins are a nice way to customize your Steam Deck. Practical they are rather not necessary.

What about a transparent front? In order to complete the look, it would of course make sense to make the front of the Steam Deck transparent. However, this is a particularly difficult process because you have to take the whole handheld apart. In addition, the screen must be moved from one case to the other, and this is really annoying because it is glued.

I have already done this with the LCD model because I installed a Full HD screen. Here you can read the article:
