Ahh, good old espionage. Great, right?! Instead of shooting around or driving the adversary to ruin with some kind of economic sanctions, we send our informants behind enemy lines and ensure sabotage. With the information we collect, we are always one step ahead of the enemy.
What sounds really exciting and fun on paper is in factnot for a long time. The reason: The spying options cannot keep up with the other features that have been expanded over the years.
It's not just fans who see it that way. The developers themselves have also admitted that spies are looking old at the moment.
Espionage needs an overhaul
They have been piling up in the official forum for yearscomplaintsabout the unsatisfactory espionage options in Stellaris. In a blog post from late 2024, game director Stephen Muray even agreed with these complaints:
Spy networks are difficult to track, [espionage] generally has little impact and no real counterbalance.
Now the fans are in demand
So ideas are needed. And how do you get them? The best way, of course, is to ask the huge fan base!
In a new oneSteam postJust in time for the start of the new year, fans are being asked to share their ideas for improving espionage in the 4X strategy game. You can give your feedback on the topicthrough a surveysend directly to the developers.
However, the developers do not specify a specific period of time when the feedback will be evaluated and, ideally, implemented. So you definitely have to be patient before espionage in Stellaris becomes worthwhile again.
Do you think the espionage in Stellaris deserves an overhaul? What would you like to see from a revamped spy system? What do you perhaps even like about the current espionage system and should be retained? Don't just write it to the developers, write it to us too - namely in the comments!
