Overview of reviews on Mr. No Pain
ComingeOon (rating: 9/10)
If you are a hardcore fan of action films or just looking for a good film for the evening (provided you can endure violence), Novocaine with Jack Quaid is the right film for you. You will hardly get yourself in with laughter.
TheWrap
The directors Robert Olsen and Dan Berk (Villains) know how to design scenes and situations that make an exhilarating cinema comedy out of tricky contradictions. In the truest sense of the word. In Novocaine, people are literally slit on the pages, and that's damn funny.
Screencrush (rating: 6/10)
Novocaine is in the same cinema tradition as films in the style of Evil Dead II and Crank. The audience is invited to draw a twisted pleasure from it, watching how a heroic main actor is beaten up in an inventive way. Novocaine is not as good as these films. But he is painless enough for his conditions. Even fun.
The Hollywood Reporter
Novocaine, in which the opening credits are underlaid with "Everybody Hurts" by Rem, would probably have worn out at some point (at 110 minutes he still feels overwhelming), it would not be [Jack] Quaid's great performance.
Collider (rating: 8/10)
All in all, Novocaine is entertaining fun, which ensures tough action with body horror means. The film increases the adrenaline level to deliberately absurd action and horror film levels without losing humor and heart.
Deadline
Novocaine is often a lot of fun, but one wishes that [Lars] Jacobson's script would have been revised to iron out some weaknesses. It does not help that some late developments in the plot appear bizarre or make a large part of your own structure invalid.
IGN (rating: 8/10)
Despite the shallow gimmicks, Novocaine offers a new view of the unfortunate hero, which is brought to life by the irresistible Jack Quaid. If you have nothing against a few bloody scenes in a romantic comedy, the film is just the thing for your next date evening.
Indiewire (evaluation: c+)
[...] All of this is a long way to say that the first act of [Dan] Berks and [Robert] Olsen's film in a way is sweet, funny and intelligent, which will feel like a distant memory when Novocaine comes to an end.
By the way, Jack Quaid is the son of actors Dennis Quaid (The Day after Tomorrow, The Substance) and Meg Ryan (Harry and Sally, sleepless in Seattle). In 2023 he even played in the award -winning film Oppenheimer, where he embodied the American physicist Richard Feynman.
In 2026 we see Quaid again as a Hughie Campbell in the Boys when he and his crew around Mother's Milk (LAZ Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capone), Butcher (Karl Urban) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) to fight against Homelander (Antony Starr). All new information about season 5 can be found in the box above.
