An indefinable noise coming from your AirPods Pro 2?

This was also discussed on January 9thAccidental Tech Podcastdiscussed. One of the moderators describes that the charging case on his AirPods Pro 2 makes a strange sound when he puts one of the earbuds in the charging case while the other is already in it.

He doesn't understand the meaning of the sound; is it perhaps some kind of error message that indicates a loading problem?

Mastodon user Ian Williamson jumped on the podcast episode and posted oneAudio recording of the AirPods sound. The noise can be heard towards the end of the recording.

According to his own statement, the noise was driving him crazy because he couldn't figure out where it was coming from.

The cause lies in the update to iOS 18.1

Williamson then came across the solution. It is related to the new health function of iOS 18.1: The AirPods Pro 2 can be used since then, you can also carry out a hearing test with the in-ear headphones to check how well your hearing works.

In the corresponding oneSupport document writes AppleIn the end, the AirPods may intermittently play a quiet sound when in the charging case.

This is to ensure that the microphones and speakers of the earphones function properly and thus deliver “high-quality results” in the hearing test.

The ominous AirPods Pro 2 sound didn't just concern the Accidental Tech Podcast or Williamson. There are also some posts on Reddit from the past few months on the same topic. In most threads, the solution was also revealed via Apple's support page. Nevertheless, the phenomenon still seems to be bothering many AirPods owners today.
