Stand:
The PlayStation Network currently has problems - but in 2011 it was worse. A hacker attack paralyzed the service for 23 days and provided chaos.
TheNetwork (PSN) is down again-and many players remember one of the worst incidents in Playstation history. In 2011 Sony's online service was paralyzed for 23 days after a massive hacker attack.
The 2011 PSN hack: a historical blackout
On April 20, 2011, Sony took the PlayStation Network offline - without warning. Millions of players could not play online or access digital purchases. It was only after several days that it became clear that Hacker had stolen the data of around 77 million users.
Particularly explosive: Sony only delayed the players that personal data such as email addresses, passwords and possibly also credit card information were also affected. The resentment of the community was huge and the company was under massive pressure.
Three weeks without PSN - and the consequences for Sony
What started as a short disorder became an unprecedented fiasco. The PlayStation Network was not available worldwide for 23 days. The PlayStation Store even only returned on June 2, 2011. For Sony, the incident was not only a financial, but also an image damage. The company cost over $ 170 million to close the vulnerabilities and compensate for players affected. As a reparation, users received the "Welcome Back" package, which contained two free PS3 games and a free Playstation Plus subscription-with which you are currentlyreceived.
In view of the current problems with the PlayStation Network, the uncertainty among players is great. Even if there are no signs of a similarly dramatic incident this time, the 2011 memory trauma remains present for many HP fans. How long the current failure lasts remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the Playstation community already has experience with long waiting times.
