Stand:
Call of Duty celebrates Squid Game with an event. However, the free update has many costs and bugs. The CoD players from BO6 and Warzone are complaining.
That sounds promising at first: the release of the second season of “Squid Game” is in:6 and Warzone a thematic crossover event. From iconic operator skins to a “Red, Green” killstreak mode straight from theNetflix-Hit – the package screams hit! But the reality? Well, she screams too – but out of frustration.
Call of Duty x Squid Game: Be careful with expensive skins from the Netflix series - you won't be able to finish
Probably the most noticeable problem:the “Roped In” finisher (“Einfang” in German). For just $10, you can get the event pass with a move that eliminates your opponent with a retro telephone cable. Just like instop. Sounds cool, but only works in theory or the Netflix series. Players report that after the animation, enemies simply get back up and carry on as if nothing had happened.
In the worst case, you move on and the supposedly finished opponent cheekily shoots you in the back. This is what the unfinished finisher looks like in Warzone:
Of course he has no sympathy for that. Comments like “Skill-based executions” or “The new feature: the game uninstalls itself” show how deep the player disappointment is. On a large scaleThere was a lot of hope, as frustration and cheaters dominated the headlines at the end of 2024.
Squid Game x Call of Duty: When a crossover is more expensive than a new game
Expensive, but also (what) free:And then there is the price. The complete Squid game experience inCoDThe colleagues at dexerto.com have calculated that it costs a whopping 8,700 CoD points with skins in the shop and an event pass. Depending on the exchange rate, that's between 75 and 90 euros. For comparison: For that money you could get a completely new game with a season pass. But no, you get some skins that will remind you of the VIPs and Guardians from the series, they say. Luckily there is a green participant skin free for everyone, so we have to be fair.
Criticism of CoD, Squid Game and in general:The event also tries to pimp the Zombies mode with a squid game twist. Sounds good? Unfortunately not if the fun ends after 10 rounds. The players want more. Activision delivers less. “This crossover is a scam“, „They invest more in cosmetic bundles than in anti-cheat systems“ – statements like this are not uncommon:
- „Skill-based executions.“ – @Kroactive
- “I’m done with this game. An update every week, but no improvement, just new problems.” – @libaaxcode
- Pay2Lose: “You pay to lose.” – @Angelica_Reed1
- “They refuse to fix the game and ruin every chance they get.” – @FlowsFEED
- “The update is so trash, the whole game feels ruined.” – @Lanatomathis
- “Activision is obviously just out for money. More bundles, less quality.” – @Insanegamer52
- “I'd rather save the $87 for the next Call of Duty.” – Community Member
- “Not even surprised, they put a price tag on it but don’t test anything first.” – @xvoltsy
Much of the criticism is not new and is more general than just specific to the new event. But it is a disappointment right at the start of the year that could have been avoided. And yes, the event certainly has highlights and CoD needs more of them if it doesn't make it to the new onewants to disappear into the shooter obscurity. But for many players, the frustration with the price and the bugs is louder than the enthusiasm.
