The game association has published the top 20 best-selling games in Germany. Overall, there are few real surprises, but we did notice another detail that seems remarkable.
Only one game from this list is not based on an existing brand. All others belong to a larger, already existing IP (=Intellectual Property). Originality doesn't seem to pay off in our industry.
Skull and Bones is the only new IP among the top 20 bestselling games of 2024 in Germany
That's what it's about:Football games traditionally sell well in Germany, and of course Call of Duty. Then it's time for some titles that some people might not have expected. In third place is:and in fourth place the. There is no trace of Black Myth: Wukong or Stellar Blade as well as of- but in the case of Black Myth, this is because the publisher doesn't pass on the numbers.

Little really new:is now the 21st part of the Call of Duty series,continues the FIFA series, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero or Dragon Age: Veilguard, as well– they all belong to larger, long-standing brands. Not even Star Wars Outlaws dares to do anything really new, after all Star Wars has been around for around 50 years now.
Einzig Skull and Bonesholds the flag high for originality and the courage to try something new, as ironic and absurd as that may sound. But the title is not based on a well-known franchise and does not belong to any major brand, nor is it a sequel or a remake. This puts the game in 20th place.
So it's not too surprisingthat the big publishers prefer to rely more on the well-known and tried and tested rather than taking new risks.By the way, things didn't look much different in 2023, quite the opposite. A year ago there was withalso only a single game that established a new IP - or at least tried to.

But not even Skull and Bones is completely new and independent:If the ships and everything else in Skull and Bones seem suspiciously familiar to you, that could be because we are dealing with a new, independent brand - but the whole thing was originally planned as an Assassin's Creed spin-off. However, as is well known, the plans surrounding the “AAAA” title have changed several times over time.
