In one respect, no console has ever been able to surpass the PS2: with 155 million units sold, it has been considered the most successful console to date for years. And to make it a little more difficult for the competition, Sony has now added a few million more.
The PS2 has sold over 150 million units
In a historicalSummaryTo mark the thirtieth anniversary of the PlayStation brand, Sony has given a few key details about its consoles. One number stands out:160.000.000– that’s how many units Sony sold of the PS2.
What's interesting is that this is an increase of 5 million units compared to the last sales figures that Sony reported almost 10 years agopublished.
A decent run that also lasted a long time:The PS2 came onto the market in November 2000 and it wasn't until 2013 that official production came to an end. No other console has ever been produced for such a long time.
Even games were delivered until 2013, for example another add-on was releasedor a porting of.
This is what made the PS2 so popular
When it launched, the PS2 laid the foundation for an extraordinary generation of consoles. It was announced as the successor console to the enormously successful PS1 and, depending on the region, came onto the market one to two years before the Xbox and GameCube competition.
As with the PS1, the game lineup was also convincing:The first threefirst appeared on the PlayStation, literally blew millions of car fans away andfound its bloody origins on the PS2.
The console has a total of over 4,000 individual games - a gigantic lineup that was accumulated before the time of any online shops.
The PS2 was also the first console to come with a DVD drive and was one of the cheapest DVD players available at the time. It could even output 5.1 sound via the optical audio output, making it a really good home entertainment machine.
Can a console beat the PS2?
Among the stationary consoles, no other device currently comes close to the PS2. The next contender is the PS4 with 117 million units, but that has actually already been replaced by the PS5.
If handhelds are included, the Nintendo DS is just behind the PS2 with 154 million units sold, but it has also been out of production for a long time.
Only the Nintendo Switch could come dangerously close, it currently has 146 million sales and is still in stores. However, sales figures have recently fallen to around 2 million units per quarter, so whether the Switch can still make such a big jump is very uncertain.
The best-selling consoles and handhelds of all time:
- PlayStation 2:160 million
- Nintendo DS:154 million
- Nintendo Switch:146 million
- Game Boy (Color):118 million
- PlayStation 4:117 million
