Epic always has free games on Thursdays and while not all of them are absolute gems, there are always exciting highlights. The title that we would like to recommend to you today may not look very inviting at first glance, but it impressed us with its entertaining and simple gameplay principle.

In Brotato we become a defensive potato who faces an alien invasion using weapons ranging from knives to medieval lances to rocket launchers. There are also a variety of boosts and power ups that make each run different.
Admittedly, the whole thing doesn't look very pretty or varied, but the mechanics are convincing. The game will be particularly interesting for you if you enjoy itbecause there is some overlap between the titles, but also enough differences to provide a breath of fresh air.
This is how the game principle works
Brotato is an arena (auto) shooter roguelite that we play from a bird's eye view. We set off with a potato hero of our choice and unlock new tuber characters as the game progresses. These all come with their own bonuses, but also nasty disadvantages, so we always have to try to use the character's strengths and compensate for the weaknesses.
For example, in the case of an old man, the enemies are 25% slower and there are also 10% fewer of them. The old man also gets more materials that are used for upgrades. But the map is also 33% smaller, making it harder to avoid enemies and also slower.
The game progresses in waves during which we kill aliens, either by automatically shooting our potato with the equipped weapons like in Vampire Survivors or by shooting manually - depending on the setting.
We collect materials that we invest in new weapons or weapon upgrades after each wave in the shop, or in items that give us useful boosts, such as boiling water, which gives us +2 to elemental damage, but also max life lowered by one point. In addition, we optionally level attributes such as range and movement speed.
Each wave only lasts up to a minute and a half and a complete run takes around 30 minutes, if we make it to the boss and win at the end. This makes Brotato the perfect title for in between. We recommend that you play it comfortably on the Steam Deck.
The mechanics and options for new builds offer so much variety that it doesn't get boring so quickly.
Many difficulty options ensure accessibility
There are also a lot of options when adjusting the difficulty. Not only can we choose from predefined levels of difficulty for each round, but we can also customize individual points. This includes, for example, enemy life, but also the opacity of explosions and projectiles.
This is really useful if we can't complete a run with a specific character for a very specific reason, for example if the flying projectiles keep killing us.
By the way, if you don't want to grab the game via Epic, but rather on a console, for example,It is also permanently cheap there. In the PS and Xbox Store it costs just 4.99 euros.
Could Brotato be something for you too or do you already know the game?
