Updates to a console's firmware are often used to introduce completely new features and thus keep the systems "fresh". Especially with the PlayStation 5, we can expect more new features this year than in recent years.
At least that is what can be concluded from an interview given to journalist Stephen Totilofor game filewith Sony officials. Accordingly, Sony plans to increase the frequency of firmware updates for the PlayStation 5 consoles starting this year.
More frequent major firmware updates with new features
Important:This refers to the “big” firmware updates, of which there have usually been two in recent years – one in spring and one in autumn. These usually delivered completely new features; in October, for example, the welcome hub was introduced.
However, the already very regular “small” firmware updates, which mostly only improve system stability, are not included. However, it is not clear from the interview how frequently there will be major firmware updates in the future.
But that's the reason for the increase.According to Game File, Sony has done background work on the backend to ensure that the consoles are now able to generally receive updates faster - especially those that do not require dedicated downloads. It is now technically possible to provide firmware updates more regularly.
It is not yet known which possible new features will come to the PS5 in the next major patch. Many fans are still hoping for even better customization of the dashboard.
The PlayStation 5 was launched in November 2020 and has sold 60 million copies since then. In 2024, Sony released the PS5 Pro, a technically advanced model that is primarily intended to appeal to enthusiasts.
