In open world games, the question of the size of the map automatically arises. After all, a larger map theoretically invites more exploration. We now know that size is not an indication of the quality of the world.
Nevertheless, it is still exciting to know what kind of game world we are getting ourselves into. Therefore he hasYouTube-Kanal DG VFXbefore the release ofCalculated how many square kilometers of area await us in the Japan branch.
The map of AC Shadows is not much larger than that of AC Origins
It was already clear before the calculation: the open world of Assassin's Creed Shadows would not be the largest in the game series. Ubisoft itself had already commented on this and
However, this was only a rough statement, which is also a matter of interpretation due to the different conditions of the game worlds such as bodies of water.
Therefore, the YouTube channel DG VFX, known for its calculations of video game worlds, has taken the trouble to provide us with some numbers:
This is how big the AC Shadows map is:
- Playable area:84 km²
- Entire map:125 km² (including bodies of water and non-climbable areas)

If we now take the playable area of AC Origins (also calculated by DG VFX), it becomes clear that Shadows is only slightly larger. With a land mass of 80 km², Origins is only roughly 4 km² smaller than Shadows. In comparison: Odyssey's landmass is 130 km², and Valhalla's (England only) is 94 km².
This is how the area was calculated:To get these values for the size of the game world, the YouTuber grabbed the AC Shadows map, analyzed the distances using previous gameplay footage and finally calculated them using the ImageJ software.
Since more and more precise information will be available for a calculation after the game is released, it is quite conceivable that a final calculation will differ slightly from this one. Nevertheless, these numbers already provide a very good picture of how big the world is.
New parkour clips show how Naoe moves through this huge world:
How rich the open world of AC Shadows will be in the end is a completely different matter. The size says nothing about how much fun it is to explore the world and how meaningfully filled it is. Nevertheless, the fact that Ubisoft has kept the world comparatively clear gives hope that it appears coherent.
Assassin's Creed Shadows will now be released on March 20, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Thanks to a leak, we already know more about the first DLC. For example, this will make part of the game world accessible to us. You can read more about this in the article linked above. There you will also find our comparison article on the size of all Assassin's Creed worlds.
