News - Virtua Fighter: SEGA is now reviving the ancient fighting game

SEGA had already announced that it would dig up some old brands from the attic. It has now been confirmed that the venerable Virtua Fighter is apparently also one of them.

Some time ago, SEGA announced that it would once again dedicate itself to some of the old brands that were popular at the time, such as Jet Set Radio or Crazy Taxi. Now a veteran of beat 'em ups is joining us: Virtua Fighter.

As Justin Scarpone, Head of Transmedia at SEGA, confirmed to his colleagues at VGC, a new game in the series is in development, for the first time since 2006. After almost 20 years, the title is set to make its return.

Of course, there are no details about the new game yet, but Scarpone addresses the issue of appealing to both the old Virtua Fighter fans (and they are really old these days) and the younger audience who have never heard of Virtua Fighter.

“The interesting thing is that there is a generation of people who still remember these titles from their childhood or adolescence and who are now in their 40s or 50s,” he says. “And then there’s a younger generation that, frankly, really doesn’t connect with that brand.”

“So the challenge is that we have to ask ourselves how we can connect as we try to reinvent these IPs. What platforms and how can we continue to develop the appeal for these IPs that are, frankly, less well known? And how can we connect with new generations?”

It should also not be forgotten that genre competitors haven't exactly been sleeping in recent years - Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are currently in impressive form and it certainly won't be easy to compete against them.

Just in time for the announcement of the release date of Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, there is also a new trailer with gameplay scenes.
