News - Nintendo Switch: Virtual Game Cards make digital game versions more flexible

In the future, thanks to Virtual Game Cards, you can use digital game versions on the Switch more flexible and on more systems.

Physical media have an advantage: they can be lent and used without great circumstances on other platforms. This is sometimes difficult for digital game purchases - but Nintendo wants to improve on the switch systems thanks to the newly presented virtual game cards.

The feature was presented at the Direct Conference today and is supposed to make digital game versions as flexible as physical game cards. If you acquire a game for the Switch digital, it will be displayed as a virtual game card on your console in the future. You can then load the games there or "eject".

You will be able to install the digital game on a second switch console via the latter function. However, the prerequisite for this is that the second switch uses the same account. In addition, switch consoles only have to be linked once for the use of the feature - and of course an internet connection is required for "loading" and "eusing". This will also be possible to exchange digital versions between Switch and Switch 2.

You can also give digital games thanks to the Virtual Game Cards. However, the feature is limited to the set family group. A game card can be awarded to a family member for up to 14 days via the menu, which can then play the game; This is then transferred back to the original buyer. Only one loan is possible at the same time.

The Virtual Game Cards are implemented by a system update at the end of April 2025.
