From Software brought the Souls genre into the mainstream. It's hard to say otherwise given Elden Ring's latest sales figures.
From Software has basically created an entire genre - fantasy role-playing games with brutal bosses that can cost you every nerve. But what's more impressive is that the studio has finally brought this genre into the mainstream. This is proven more than clearly by the current sales figures from From Software viaPress releaseannounced, although it doesn't say how many players ultimately threw in the towel before the credits rolled.
Accordingly, Elden Ring has now sold 28.6 million copies since it was released in 2022. That's more than the Dark Souls series had sold in total up to the release of Elden Ring - that was "only" 27 million by then. But the Souls series has actually received another boost from Elden Ring and, with its three games and six DLCs, is now at 37 million.
So Souls likes no longer have anything to do with a niche genre. This is also confirmed by the sales of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, which sold over five million copies in the first three days after its release.
So it's no wonder that From Software wants to stay loyal to the series for the time beinghas now announced a multiplayer spin-off with co-op mode for up to three players. However, the question remains open as to whether and when Dark Souls will continue and whether there will be a sequel or remaster of Bloodborne at some point, especially since Armored Core has also squeezed in. Many options for the studio.
What's also exciting is the question of how long From Software can continue to operate largely freely and unbound, the parent company of From Software and in the event of a takeover it is very likely that some announcements from Sony will be made.
The long wait is over and the big add-on Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is finally starting.
