News - Beyond Good & Evil 2: Creator comments on the numerous development problems

In one of his rare interviews, the original creator of Beyond Good & Evil spoke out about the sequel's numerous development problems. At the management level there was constant rumblings and disagreements.

Michel Ancel is considered the creator of Beyond Good & Evil and also initially co-designed the sequel Beyond Good & Evil 2, which was met with high expectations. While the game is still a long time coming, Ancel has since left Ubisoft and is no longer involved. In one of his rare interviews, he now provides further background information on the numerous problems with the development of the game.

Opposite the French magazineSuperpowerAncel has now spoken in more detail about Beyond Good & Evil 2, which has been in a kind of development hell for many years, but is reportedly still in the works at Ubisoft and is still scheduled to appear. But why is everything so complicated?

Ancel says: "As far as Beyond Good & Evil 2 is concerned, for example, there were just too many problems between the managers. The artistic director wanted to constantly redo everything and the game director wanted a game with randomly generated dungeons. I, on the other hand, dream of a space game Adventure. We couldn't find a match and the game director developed the project in other directions."

And further: "In these situations, teams are thrown around and don't even know who is actually in charge and making decisions. The producer was supposed to sort things out, but that didn't happen. In the end, Yves Guillemot even had to go to Montpellier and take things back on the right path, but that wasn't enough and the game director continued his stubbornness."

Michel Ancel left Ubisoft in 2020. Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still in the works, but rumor has it that the title is still a few years away from release.

Do we really need to know about a game five years in advance?
