Double revenge
In Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2 we slip into the rotten bones of Raziel. As a powerful bloodsucker, he is actually one of chief vampire Kain's closest confidants. But because Raziel reaches the next stage of evolution before his vain boss and is the first vampire to get wings, Kain simply plucks his new achievements from his flesh and throws him into the Lake of the Dead, where Raziel will suffer eternal torments from hell.
There he languishes for the next 500 years and experiences physical and mental destruction before a mysterious old deity finally saves him and sends him on a two-game, approximately 20-hour campaign of revenge against his former tormentors.
