I am a fan of the outdoor app »Komoot«. I have been using the software on my cell phone for bike tours or small hikes for around ten years. I am most enthusiastic about the numerous planned tours of the community that I like to use.
If you have the app, as I do, more often, then you will inevitably come into contact with both paid options:
- Komoot offers different card packages for a one -off payment.
- There is also Komoot Premium - an annual subscription that costs 60 euros.
Before I come to the latter, I would like to briefly go into the card packages.
Region packages and world package - why?
In my view, Komoot's card packages are very practical because they have two essential functions:
- Offline cards:This is useful if you live in a region in which there are not mobile phone reception everywhere - for example in forests. Perhaps you would also like to save yourself data volume or put a little less strain on the cell phone battery.
- Language navigation:I usually have no time to keep an eye on the cell phone in my pocket and when cycling, especially when I walks or hikes and cycling, because I concentrate on the route. The voice announcements are really practical.
With the card packages you have various purchase options, which are activated by one -time payment:
- Einzelregion:The smallest package with map material for your area costs 4 euros. Among other things, it includes a city with the district.
- Region package:The larger card package comprises several single regions and offers itself if you cover further routes or plan tours that are a little further away from your home town. A regional package costs 9 euros and includes the entire "West-Black Forest".
- World Packet:With this package you can unlock the map material for the whole world. It costs 30 euros, but is often advertised as an offer within the Komoot app for 20 euros.
Tipp:If you register as a new customer at Komoot, you will receive a single region free of charge. So you can try out whether the navigation and offline cards bring you an advantage.
Whether the surcharge for the World Package is particularly worthwhile depends on it. Do you make regular weekend trips or travel and are planning outdoor activities there? Then the world package is sometimes cheaper than buying individual regional packages again and again.
If you mainly stay in your surrounding area, a larger regions package for almost nine euros is the best option in my view.
Komoot Premium-the all-round carefree subscription?
In addition to the card packages, there is also "Komoot Premium" - a subscription that you have to renew every year for just under 60 euros.
The offer includes the World Package including offline cards and language navigation, but also offers other features:
- Sports -specific cards:Additional card information with official mountain bike paths including difficulty levels, long-distance cycle paths and hiking trails.
- Tour-Wetter:The app shows you a weather forecast for the different stages of your tour. You also get tips on such as "Take a rain jacket with" or "It gets hot. Take enough water with you. "
- Multi -day planner:Should your tours take longer than a day.
- Live-Tracking:You can share your location with other people in real time.
- Own collections:Here you can collect tours and your own collections.
- Komoot card for Garmin:An improved navigation for the Komoot app on Garmin devices.
That's why Komoot Premium was a bad purchase for me
At first glance, the additional function of Komoot Premium sounds promising. I myself was seduced last year and bought the package and then found that I basically don't need it.
This is partly due to my region. Here in northern Germany in the Lüneburg Heath I don't need the tour weather.
My regular weather app is enough for me, as the weather conditions in the lowlands are relatively stable and less changeable than in the mountains.
I personally do not need multi-day planners, live tracking or even my own collections. I don't do multi-day tours myself and I can share the live location on the iPhone with on-board agents.
I was primarily lured with the sports -specific cards. I thought that I could discover new routes.
Unfortunately, that was not the case. On the one hand, there is no mountain bike trail in my area. On the other hand, the hiking trails are mostly regular forest or dirt roads on which I am still traveling- or they are already taken into account on the regular map.
That was quite disappointing for me and ended with the fact that I didn't use the premium functions. Annoying, because the subscription is not a bargain.
Only interesting for a limited target group
Why did I go into the card packages at the beginning? Because I think they are sufficient in most cases. Offline cards and navigation are practical, with the rest of your activities and the region where you are on the move.
The features of the premium subscription sound well, but you should really think about whether you need them and whether they make sense in your area.
A good weather app, for example, also provides reliable predictions; Live tracking dominate smartphones even without a comoot.
The additional offer could be interesting if you are planning tours multi -day or the sports -specific maps in your region provide better results than in mine.
I would still go so far as to say: Many of you can save the premium subscription and do not miss anything. So don't make the same mistake as I do.
I would like to be Komoot Premium as a monthly model. On the one hand, you could try the package without investing 60 euros.
On the other hand, I could use the package in a certain region (for example on vacation), where it really offers me added value.
What do you think of Komoot Premium? Do you use the subscription model and offer you real added value? Or do you put the card packages or the free model? Give me your opinion in the comments.
