A US survey has asked two groups how they look into the future of society with AI: on the one hand, AI experts and on the other hand normal citizens. The forecasts of both groups partly gone apart.
In general, experts see the future more positively, and their forecast for a special area can be optimistic.
That happened:
The Pew Research Center in the USA has oneOpinion pollcarried out on the topic: What are the expectations about the opportunities and risks of AI in the future?
In the summer and autumn 2024, a group of 1,013 AI experts and 5,410 adults from the general public were asked on the one hand.
As AI experts, the makers of the survey identified US citizens from 21 conferences with AI focus from 2023 and 2024, which appeared there as authors or presenters.
Experts are rather enthusiastic, the general public is rather concerned
The survey does not show excessively enthusiastic experts compared to a chronically suspicious population. But with the very general assessment of whether AI will be rather good or bad for us, the views of both groups differ significantly:
- 56 percent of the experts believe that AI will have a very or relatively positive influence on the USA over the next 20 years. In contrast, only 17 percent of the respondents from the general population are of this view.
- 47 percent of the experts surveyed describe themselves as
more enthusiastic than worried
(more excited than concerned
) About the increasing use of AI in everyday life. In contrast, 51 percent are among the adults from the general populationmore concerned than enthusiastic
.
Experts see the opportunities for the world of work
A large gap between the forecasts of the experts and that of the general population also gives up when it comes to work:
- 73 percent of experts assume that AI will have a very or relatively positive influence on how people work over the next 20 years. The citizens surveyed in the survey only see this.
- The concern for the job cuts is increased in the population with 64 percent. However, only 39 percent of the experts forecast this
When asked which professions are most likely to be threatened by AI, there is greater agreement between experts and citizens:
- An increased danger forcashiersee 75 percent in both groups.
- AtJournalistsThere is also agreement: 60 percent see a threatening job cuts here in both groups.
- AlsoSoftware developerConsider 50 percent of AI experts to be potentially affected. This is seen in the general population 48 percent.
- Clearly gives the opinionTruck driversapart: This time the population is more optimistic. Only 33 percent of the citizens share the view that AI could displace the profession. In contrast, there are 62 percent of the experts.
In one area, the experts look particularly positive into the future - and that affects all of us
In general, however, such figures can make it optimistic: people who deal professionally to develop AI in various sectors are more positive into the future.
The experts are particularly confident for a specific area: 84 percent of them expect relatively to high positive developments by AI over the next 20 years in themedical care. Only 44 percent of the respondents from the general population see that.
Medicine in particular may not all have an eye on when it is spoken of artificial intelligence. But at the same time everyone can benefit from technical progress in this area.
What do you think about it? Do you look at certain professional groups as particularly endangered? And does the potential takeover of activities by AI have to be something bad at all? Write us your thoughts in the comments!
