The game within a game was so popular in The Witcher 3 that it was even released as a standalone. And now the developers have good news too.
Gwent is officially back!According to the developers, this was a great wish of the community that they would like to fulfillInterviewmit Easy Allies.
What we know about Gwent in Witcher 4
Just a quick reminder:Gwent is a fictional card game that first appeared in Geralt's third adventure.Two players sit opposite each other with their decks of cards, which can of course be expanded and adapted. It is played against NPCs and is a fun way to earn money.
The cards show creatures, places or events from the Witcher universe. In the more complex standalone version ofThere's a surprising amount of lore, especially in the spin-off.
The developers have not yet revealed any details,but we strongly suspect that Gwent will be tweaked a bit for The Witcher 4. At least to represent appropriate new creatures and locations. Game Director Sebastian Kalemba said:
We love Gwent too! It's just part of it. We think people won't be disappointed.
Ciri is the new protagonist of the Witcher series and apparently she learned how to play Gwent from her foster father Geralt. She might even play a game against him, as his appearance has also been officially confirmed:
According to the lore, Gwent was invented by dwarves and in reality by the Witcher developers. However, it is loosely based on the card game “Barrel”, which appears in the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski.
