Even though the story of The Veilguard is relatively linear, at some points you can choose which quest you want to do first. Mostly when you have to decide which companion you want to recruit first. For example, you can either bring Taash into the team before Emmerich or vice versa. But that doesn't have a big impact on the story.

There is currently no DLC planned for The Veilguard. So you can count on a completed story and don't have to worry the whole time about whether you'll miss the game's biggest twist, as was the case with Inqusition, if you don't buy a DLC.

When is time for companion and side quests?

Basically, there is relatively little to stop you from alternating main and companion quests at any time. However, some companion tasks are also dependent on the progress of the main story. For example, for the end of Davrin's quest you have to be well through the second act and Neve and Lucanis are also linked to the main quest. We would recommend the following rhythm:

  • Play the main quest until you have recruited Lucanis andThe relic smuggling caseis done. Then first use the time and explore a few of the new areas, i.e. the Arlathan Forest, Treviso and Minrathous. You should do as many side quests as you can, especially in the two cities.
  • Once you're ready, playThe Guardian's best friendand here recruits Davrin for the Veil Watch. Be sure to only do this once you have completed side quests in the two cities. At least, if you want to do it all... it might take a while.
  • AfterThe siege of WeißhauptThe game will even actively advise you to take care of your companions. Take note of this, but pay attention to the three main questsBloodbath,The Wild Swan CaseandThe cauldronare important for some companions. Afterwards, at the latest, you can put all your energy into side and companion quests.
  • If you go to the quest,The Blood of ArlathanMake sure you've already completed Davrin's quest up to "Hope on Wings."
  • Then we move rapidly towards the final battle with the gods. The natural ending point is the questWhen plans complement each other, but the game itself points this out very emphatically.
