The first developer preview of Android 16 is now available and reveals some new features that will be introduced with the release of the update (via9to5Google).
For comparison: The first developer preview of Android 15 was released in February 2024.
Seven innovations will probably come with Android 16
As always applies: Features that can be seen in the preview do not necessarily have to be included in the final version. As has happened in the past, Google can remove individual functions from the update.
Notification cooldown
If several notifications are received in a short period of time (e.g. in a group chat), the smartphone automatically turns down the volume for two minutes. Calls, alarms and priority calls are not affected.
All notifications received during this cooldown period can be viewed with a swipe from the top of the screen.
Health Connect
According to the new description in Health-Connect, data collection now includes medical records including vaccinations and laboratory results.
FHIR is the standard for exchanging electronic health data. Apps require the user's explicit consent to access medical data stored in Health Connect.
Display color (Pixel 9 only)
A new display color is being tested for the Pixel 9 series under the developer preview. According to the portal9to5GoogleThis option makes the screen appear “warm and yellow” and resembles a night light.
Audio sharing
Audio sharing can be used to create an “audio stream” that works like an access point on the Android phone. Access is controlled via a name and a password. The other person can connect to the audio stream using an LE Audio compatible headset.
New display option
There is an option in the settings to dim the screen brightness more than it normally does. This can be particularly helpful for night reading.
Photo selection
Photo Picker provides a secure, integrated way to allow an app to access selected images and videos from local storage and the cloud, rather than accessing the entire media library, Google says.
Privacy Sandbox
Android 16 includes the latest version of Privacy Sandbox. However, the exact details are not yet known.
