The PS3 is a legendary console, but also notorious for its complex hardware. In particular, the built-in cell chip with its unusual architecture turned out to be a gigantic optimization hurdle for many developers. Therefore, its emulation was considered almost impossible for decades - even for the PS5. But a YouTuber is now proving the opposite.
PS5 chips with poor quality are used for other purposes
Have you ever asked yourself what happens if a PS5 chip in production does not meet the quality criteria set by the manufacturer AMD? For example, if one or two of the eight CPU cores don't work?
Normally it would probably end up in the trash, but with a few tricks the damaged cores can be deactivated so that the chip can then be used in another form.
One form of this is mining Bitcoin.AMD sold the trimmed processors to motherboard manufacturer ASRock, among others, who offered a complete mining rig based on PS5 for just under $400.
Here you can see the mining board, which looks like a graphics card and is connected like this:
With its low price, the board is cheap, but also completely useless for players because they cannot be used for gaming. There is actually no corresponding software support for this, for example in Linux.
The emphasis here is on “actually”. Because the YouTuber Lowest Logan managed it with a few adjustments. He grabbed one of the mining rigs, plugged in a power supply, and patched Linux to recognize the PS5 hardware.
The "unusable" PS5 chip manages 60 fps and sometimes even 4K in PS3 games!
After the graphics card was finally recognized, it was possible to start games.in 300 fps? Not a problem at all, but not surprising either. Things got really interesting after installing a PS3 emulator.
Legale Emulation
Based on the video, we cannot verify whether the YouTuber used self-created backups of his PS3 games. Since he seems to be an advocate of modding old consoles, we're assuming he hasn't used any pirated versions. These would then be legally questionable, as acquisition and production are punishable.
The YouTuber could then use the emulator to play PS3 games such as:Play at a stable 60 fps in 1440p - i.e. a higher resolution than back then.Even ran in 4K at a still smooth 30 fps.
In the video you can see his attempts starting at four and a half minutes:

YouTuber destroys major PlayStation myth
And this directly destroyed a myth that actually says that it is not possible to emulate the old PS3 games on a PS5.We also assumed this a few years ago:
However, a lot has happened since then. The PS3 emulator used has gotten better and better, so it now runs with solid FPS numbers even on weak hardware. But the fact that it runs on a PS5 chip, which, due to its limitations, only has 450 megahertz instead of the maximum 2.23 gigahertz for the graphics unit, is quite an announcement.
In addition, each chip is missing two CPU cores, so they only have six cores instead of eight. With all the limitations in mind, PS3 emulation almost seems like a piece of cake, especially since no internal Sony documents could be used to make optimizations. With such an information base, it would certainly be a bit easier.
What is Sony doing with its PS3 history?
There is currently no official option for emulating PS3 games on the PS5. Only a few PS4 remasters like those from are playableor. You can also stream some PS3 games via PS Plus Premium. We have summarized them for you in this list:
PS Plus Premium games list:
There were also rumors recently that Sony wanted to bring some PS3 games to the PS5. It is not yet known whether this is emulation or porting:
It is more or less to be expected that Sony will reach a point at some point where cloud streaming is no longer feasible, since the servers only contain PS3 hardware and it will eventually become obsolete. Then there is actually no way around emulating PS3 games and now it would at least be proven that this could run on the PS5.
Which PS3 game would you play on your PS5 immediately?
