Solo Leveling: What makes Red Gates so dangerous and how they differ from traditional gates

In the world of solo leveling, almost everything is life-threatening as soon as hunters go into the so-called dungeons. In order to enter the dungeons, grab the valuable loot within, or kill powerful enemies, the corresponding “gates” must appear in the normal human world, which acts like a bridge between the human world and the dungeons.

Conventional gates are blue in color and, like hunters, are divided into S to E ranks. The associated ranks are calculated using magical sensors so that the danger to the associated raid group is kept as small as possible.

“Red Gates”, on the other hand, are a completely different caliberand initially hardly differ from a conventional gate, but they can even cost the lives of the strongest S-rank hunters.

At first glance, conventional gates and red gates can hardly be distinguished from one another

Gates appear randomly and without a specific pattern in the human world. A gate remains open until the dungeon boss is defeated. If the dungeon boss has not been defeated after a few days, a so-called “dungeon break” occurs. During a dungeon break, the creatures and beasts within the dungeon are released into the human world.

Conventional gates appear with a blue color. This then calculates how dangerous the dungeon on the other side of the portal is and assigns it to a hunter rank as a comparison. The rank of such a portal is determined by the quantity and quality of magical energy flowing from within it, as measured by magical sensors.

The portals vary in size depending on the level of danger. An S-tier portal could be about the size of a hurricane, while a D-tier gate is only the size of a door. After entering the dungeon, the raid group can leave the dungeon if desired or new members can join the raid.

Red gates, on the other hand, hardly differ from a conventional blue gate at the start of the raid. Only when the group of hunters walks through the portal and enters the dungeon does the gate change color and turn red.

There is no escape from the Red Gates

In contrast to the normal portals, hunters can no longer leave the dungeon after entering, and no one from the human world can enter. The input/output, one of the following three conditions is met:

  • the entire troop dies
  • the dungeon boss is defeated
  • a dungeon break happens

The special features of a red gate

In addition, the threat level of a Red Gate is also much higher than that of a conventional gate. The lowest level at which a Red Gate appears is B and is therefore more dangerous for any raid groups that do not have level A or higher hunters with them. In addition, Red Gates have a much more extreme environment than the “normal” portals.

In a dungeon behind a red gate, most hunters will find themselves in an environment that has extreme weather conditions - such as a scorching desert or an ice-cold snowfield. Aside from the threat of heat, cold or hunger, the trapped hunters also have to be prepared for strong creatures or monsters.

Another special feature is the flow of time in a Red Gate dungeon, because time passes more slowly there than in the human world. A complete day there corresponds to an hour in the normal world.

The red portals are almost impossible to spot because, as mentioned, they are initially indistinguishable from normal portals and reveal their true nature upon entry. Measuring the Red Gates is also problematic because the mana flow from the portal can no longer be measured precisely due to the closure of the entrance.

But now to you:What rank would you assign yourself as a hunter or huntress in the world of Solo Leveling and would you step through such a portal if one appeared in our world?
