The PS5 Pro comes with more power, but surprise! It often uses less power than the original

We measured the power consumption of the PS5 Pro and were surprised.

With the PS5 Pro, Sony recently launched the most powerful PlayStation to date. With more hardware power, the question naturally arises as to whether you will incur higher costs due to increasing power consumption. In theHowever, we came across a surprising result that will please you.

The PS5 Pro in the power consumption test

In order to make an adequate comparison, we recorded the power consumption of the PS5 Pro and the original PS5 (CFI-1000 and CFI-1100) using an energy meter.

We measured the consumption in the main menu/dashboard and also looked at how Sony's new power console performs when playing.

  • PS5:56.5 watts (idle), 71 watts (active use)
  • PS5 Pro:53.5 watts (idle), 67 watts (active use)

Power consumption when playing The Last of Us Part 1:

  • PS5:237 Watt
  • PS5 Pro:228 watts (performance graphics mode), 239 watts (pro graphics mode)

Conclusion on the power consumption of the PS5 Pro

In contrast to the PS4 Pro, which at the time consumed significantly more power than the basic PS4, the PS5 Pro's energy consumption is fortunately very different in direct comparison to the "normal" PS5. Although the differences in terms of power consumption are relatively small, it is still surprising that the more powerful console is a little bit more efficient on average.

The reason for this is likely to be a 4 nanometer manufacturing process, which has not yet been confirmed for the PS5 Pro, but is suspected by tech experts and industry insiders.

This would also make sense:Smaller manufacturing structures (the first two PS5 revisions were manufactured using a 7 nanometer process) ensure that the PS5 Pro's much more complex chip is not much larger when calculated down to the total area. And the smaller a chip, the less power it requires to operate.

The PS5 Pro has been since then07. November 2024at the price of799 Euro(without drive and stand) available.

In the GamePro test, the console was particularly successful due to a noticeable increase in performance and the increased graphical quality? including PSSR and more ray tracing power? convince. In addition to the energy efficiency mentioned above, the PS5 Pro is also pleasantly quiet in operation.

Are you surprised by the measurement data or did you expect a small advantage over the standard PS5 in terms of power consumption?
