PS5 Pro: Sony is giving you a lot of storage this time - you can use more of the SSD

The embargo for test reports on Sony's new PlayStation 5 Pro has been lifted. And, among other things, they provide important information about technical performance, power consumption and the running speed of the system. They also reveal an unexpected detail about the installed SSD.

It was already known that with 2 TB there would be significantly more storage available. It is surprising that a higher percentage of memory can actually be used. In theReview von TechradarThis is mentioned and our tester Chris confirms it in his analysis:

94.5% of the PS5 Pro's SSD storage is actually usable

Accordingly, the PS5 Pro1.89 TB of actual usable storage available, so about 94.5% of the stated 2 TB size. On the base PS5, however, this value was only 81%, where 667 GB of the total 825 GB SSD could actually be used.

There are two main reasons why you cannot use the full SSD capacity:

  1. Temporary data:Like any other console, the PS5 Pro also needs space for the operating system and temporary data. These are also stored on the SSD and fall into the “Other” section.
  2. Conversion to Gibibytes:The term "gigabyte" is common, but a "gibibyte" (GiB) specification would be more accurate. Computer systems use the binary system, which is why there is a different conversion factor? to the detriment of memory size

This conversion factor and assumptions about the PS5 Pro's cache sizeto predict the usable storage space of the new console? and came to a value of 1.76 TB.

The actual value is therefore slightly larger. There can also be several reasons for this, such as a smaller cache or a different size of the memory modules. Either way, it's good news because games won't get any smaller in the future.

If the SSD storage, which is significantly larger than that of the basic PS5, is full at some point, you can also use it with the PS5 Pro.

The PS5 Pro will be launched on November 7, 2024, and the device's RRP is 799.99 euros. Sony claims that the system has an increase in performance of 45 percent for classic rendering and an increase of 200 to 400 percent for ray tracing. The device is also Wi-Fi 7 compatible and supports all previous PS5 peripherals.

A few gigabytes or not? Would you rather have a disc drive or do you find the larger internal storage better?
