With the release of AMD's latest graphics card generation, a new scaling technique with the abbreviation FSR 4 was also introduced. This should ensure a significantly higher sharpness in games with low resolution and uses artificial intelligence or neural networks.
Colleague Chris recently worked out pro- and contra points in his article whether FSR 4 could also run on the PS5 Pro. You can read his explanations here:
Now the question "Does FSR 4 also come to the PS5 Pro?" answered officially. Mark Cerny, PS5 (Pro) chief developer and system architect, commentedIn conversation with Digital Foundryon this topic.
And as Cerny reveals, it is planned for 2026 to publish "something very similar to the FSR 4-upscaler" for the PlayStation 5 Pro. He described the technology as the "next level of evolution from PSSR". PlayStation Spectal Super Resolution-the full name-is the upcaler technique in the PS5 per works.
Focus on PSSR implementation
This next step for the technology is the result of a collaboration between Sony and AMD under the name "Project Amethyst". Cerny was very satisfied with the previous cooperation, so far the neural network of the FSR 4-up scaler has been developed together.
The PS5 chief developer also answers the question of why the new upcaler was not immediately implemented for the PS5 Pro. The focus for this year (2025) is to support the game developer in the implementation of PSSR in their titles. In general, the next evolutionary level is very ambitious and time -consuming, which is why the optimized version will only start next year.
The AMD Sony cooperation is created as a longer project and will probably continue to the next generation of consoles-i.e. the PlayStation 6.
According to Cerny, it is the long-term goal to develop a hardware architecture for machine learning. So it shouldn't be the last time that we hear something from Project Amethyst.
