The connection between Kumamoto and One Piece: The One Piece Kumamoto Revival Project

Eichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, was born and raised in Kumamoto. In 2016, his hometown was hit by two strong and devastating earthquakes.

The mangaka then decided that he wanted to help rebuild the region and started the One Piece Kumamoto Revival project. It consisted of a series of actions using the characters from One Piece to raise awareness for the city's reconstruction.

Eiichiro Oda himself had also donated approximately $6 million to the city for relief efforts.

The Kumamoto Prefectural government then decided to express its appreciation for Oda's efforts and help and therefore had the ten bronze statues of the Straw Hats made. In 2018, Luffy was unveiled as the first statue and in July 2022, Jinbe was the final statue to be completed.

What do you think of the statues and would you travel to Kumamoto to see them?
