InThe main character Rook gathers a colorful group in the lighthouse. The floating area in the void with the individual buildings and companion rooms looks great, but there were completely different ideas during the development phase - and some are really spectacular!
The art book not only shows how the designs have changed over time, but also reveals something about the intentions behind the design adaptation.
A dragon-shaped submarine for the Veilguard Veilguard
The art book gives us an idea of what a submarine might have looked like. Of course, these are concept drawings that differ somewhat from the look of the RPG. There were also very different ideas, such as a dragon or sea monster shape.
Reddit user PugThatNeedsHugs' comment on a post about the discarded designs gives you an idea. The user writes: "Well, apparently the art team did a complete boat/dragon submarine/movable crab castle base as a concept. I especially feel robbed of the Dragon Submarine."

The development: from sailing ship to dragon submarine
Several pages in the art book are dedicated to the development history of the hub area. The first idea revolved around a relatively ordinary ship to mobilize Rook and the crew in Thedas. However, the development team encountered a problem relatively quickly:
A massive sailing ship is quite eye-catching and The Veilguard was originally intended to have a spy theme. This conflict gave rise to the idea of hiding the vehicle underwater. That's when the developers came across the next challenge: submarines don't really fit into the Dragon Age fantasy universe.
Therefore, the underwater vehicle needed a stealth design that would blend in better. This is how the dragon looks were created, which you can see in the Reddit comment. The submarine even had a name, namely "Dumat" and some designs show different ideas for the structure with rooms such as the bridge, mess hall, captain's cabin and a mysterious drive that had to be "fed" with all sorts of things.
But the ideas didn't stop there!
An underwater villa was also discussed at some point and in some designs it would have sat on the back of a huge creature. It resembles a crab, but a gigantic construct was also under discussion. In any case, we should have only ever caught a very brief glimpse of the creature.
Ultimately, the whole sea theme was discarded in favor of the lighthouse. With its mix of surreal and cozy design, this looks pretty good in the world of The Veilguard. The connection to Solas also fits well into the story.
But a small homage to the sea still remains: Rook's meditation room has an underwater view. We can watch fish through the window.
We would still like the idea of the dragon submarine or the underwater villa on a sea monster not to be finally buried in the depths of the design shelf, but to be used in another offshoot.
How do you like the lighthouse hub and what do you think of the alternative ideas? Do you wish they would still be used at some point?
