Sony is giving its handheld PlayStation Portal new cloud gaming options with an update. The feature is now also available in a beta in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

A little over a year ago, Sony released the PlayStation Portal, a new handheld platform, which, however, does not work independently but rather transfers the gameplay of the PS5 to the handheld as a remote player. Now, somewhat surprisingly, this hardware has been updated to include an important new feature.

In the future, thanks to the new update, Sony will now also enable the use of cloud gaming on PlayStation Portal. This allows PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers to stream selected PS5 games directly to the handheld over the Internet, noticeably expanding the range of applications of the hardware. The cloud streaming feature is only available to PS Plus premium subscribers as part of a current beta.

Cloud streaming is also initially only available in a beta on PlayStation Portal; Even without a PS5 console, the available games can be streamed directly to the handheld via the Sony servers. Sony points out that the scope of features can still change depending on the beta process.

A total of over 120 PS5 games in the PS Plus Premium catalog are also available via cloud streaming, including well-known titles such as Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise and Dave the Diver. Streaming is possible at up to 1080p at 60 fps, and DualSense features such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are also supported. Save states and game progress can be backed up to up to 100 GB of storage space in the cloud and are also automatically synchronized with the respective player's PS5.

While the feature is available in the beta in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but also other European countries as well as Great Britain and the United States, some options are still missing at launch. For example, there are currently no game trials and streaming titles purchased from the PS Store is not yet possible. Voice chat and game invitations for selected games are also missing, as is the create button or 3D audio. Last but not least, streaming is limited to PS5 games; PS4 and PS3 games are not supported in this regard.

The PS5 handheld PlayStation Portal - a remote player for the home console - can now officially be pre-ordered.
