And yet another glitch in Destiny 2. The problem with random perks, known in the community as "Weightgate", has been confirmed as a bug and is now to be fixed.
One of the core elements of Destiny 2 are weapons and armor and the associated perks. Some perk combinations are more powerful than others and are often at the top of the wish list of players who spend countless hours farming. Problem of course: as in almost all loot games, the perks are randomly generated when loot drops. Or not?
That’s exactly the question Weightgate is all about. With a new dungeon called Vesper's Host, more and more players began to suspect that the randomness of generation wasn't all right. Some perk combinations are said to have appeared significantly less often than others, especially with stronger combinations. The suspicion arose that Bungie knowingly weighted the perks.
Although Bungie denied this, the active community has discovered through diligent research that there is actually something wrong with the perk distribution. This analysis shows a clear pattern of drop chances based on the proximity of perks in the game code, and it appears that this wasn't just true for the new dungeon's weapons. After its own internal investigation, Bungie has now confirmed that “an issue in the perk pool random generator” was indeed responsible for the problems.
The problem should now be resolved with a hotfix today, so that everything should run normally again when it comes to perk distribution. Bungie is even offering a certain kind of compensation: from November 19th to December 3rd, the primarily affected dungeon Vesper's Host will offer double item drops. In addition, a series of exotic weapons with curated perk rolls will be available from dealer Banshee-44 from December 19th.
Bungie also promises a comprehensive statement explaining the Weightgate issue in detail, but warned that this may take some time.
New story missions, new activities and new rewards are available in Echoes: Act 2, launching on June 17th.
