Assassin's Creed is one of the most successful gaming brands of all time. The series now includes 11 parts, plus a number of spin-offs, comics, books and a movie. Over 120 million games from the Assassin's Creed universe have been sold to date - making it currently 15th in the ranking of the largest game franchises in the world, roughly on a par with Sonic the Hedgehog, Madden NFL and the Lego titles (on The winners' podium includes Super Mario, Pokémon and Call of Duty). 10th place: Prince of Persia: Assassins: actually it was just supposed to be a spin-off

The Assassin's Creed franchise was created by Patrice Désilets, who previously worked on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for Ubisoft.Assassin's Creed wasn't originally planned as an independent brand, but as a spin-off titled Prince of Persia: Assassins. After completing a prototype (of which there is even a video), Ubisoft was of the opinion that the game had too little to do with the Persian prince, which is why they decided to develop it further under their own name. The similarities to Prince of Persia are still clearly visible in the acrobatic parkour passages.
