I recently made some upgrades to my Steam Deck that I'd like to tell you about soon. The process actually wasn't as difficult as one might think. As long as you approach the whole thing carefully and slowly, even a complete teardown is relatively easy.
When I finished my modifications, I still had to open the Steam Deck again because I didn't connect the audio board properly. When I reopened it, I almost forgot the most important step:
Be sure to remove the SD card before opening...
...otherwise you'll split it in two when you remove the back cover. The card reader components are located on both the front and back of the Steam Deck. If you take off the back cover without removing the SD card first, you will break it into two pieces.
I just remembered this as I was putting my opening tool into the case.
Not everyone is that lucky or experienced. Because as the Steam Deck subreddit shows, this happens so often that it's now an almost weekly topic.
And you can't blame those affected. It's something you forget very quickly and it's generally less well-known.

Why should I even open my Steam Deck?
You absolutely don't have to, but it can make sense.
If your Steam Deck fan has become louder over time, it may be time for a cleaning. Dust can collect in the fan and so it has to rotate faster for sufficient cooling. The result is a higher operating volume.
The practical thing here is that you only have to remove the back cover. All you have to do is unscrew eight screws. The back cover can then be removed with an opening tool or a guitar pick - after you have removed the microSD card.
Another reason is upgrades:With the Steam Deck you can swap analog sticks, buttons, SSD, WiFi card or even the display with a little tact.
If your Steam Deck isn't loud, stays cool and you don't need or want to replace any parts, then of course you don't need to worry about split SD cards.
