Why? The short answer is actually very simple. For theGitHub-Nutzer »Tomktor-for"The Steam Deck was always too big for its backpack. And because he always plays on the television with augmented reality video glasses (AR) or docked on the television, he decided to remove everything from the Steam Deck that he does not need himself.
That is why this is important:Crastinator-Pro shares his approach to Github. However, he does not think it is a clever idea and advises against copying. But his instructions are detailed enough, you should also want to reduce your own Steam Deck. However, note that you do this at your own risk.
Im Detail:To transform the Steam Deck into a mini console, it removes the screen and the built-in controller. He follows the following steps:
- First he has to test whether the Steam deck is even up without a screen and controller. Successfully! The image output via USB-C also works without the internally installed screen.
- The Steam Deck must then be broken down into all individual parts. Conveniently, the mainboard and the battery sits on a metal frame that the modder could continue to use. He just has to trim him a little.
- He designed the new case for his "Steam Brick" himself and then made it with a 3D printer.
- After that, the hardware only has to be put together again and done!
This is what the Steam Deck looks like without a display and controller. (Image source: Crastinator-Pro via Github)
The result:Because his new Steam console does not have built-in screen, he uses AR video glasses that are connected via USB-C for the image output-the XReal Air 2 Pro. As a controller, he connected the 8Bitdo Pro 2 controller wirelessly.
- The Steam Brick is only about a third as large as the Steam Deck and 24 percent lighter.
- The battery life with AR video glasses is almost unchanged.
- He did not want to install the screen because it would have been much more complicated and he would like to throw the Steam Brick into his backpack without a shell or display protection.
- The exact dimensions of Steam Brick are 193.5 x 126.5 x 21 mm.
