In around a week and a half, AMD will unveil what is probably the most anticipated CPU of the year: The, how he wants to take on the difficult legacy of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D and Ryzen 7 7800X3D.
- At least AMD itself seems to be confident that this task will be mastered with flying colors; after all, X3D should be able to shine with a “new interpretation”.
- This is probably expressed in a reversed approach to the structure: Ryzen 9000X3D should place the 3D V cache, which gives it its name and is so important for gaming performance, under the CCD (“Core Complex Die”) and not on top of it as before.
At least that's what the leaker claims»9550pro« on X/Twitter, which has drawn attention to itself in recent weeks with correct CPU rumors - for example about the specifications of Intel Arrow Lakeshould occur.
The leaker did not provide exact details about the inverted structure. The Wccftech portal has one for thisfirst image of a “decapitated” Ryzen 7 9800X3Dpublished that confirms this idea.
- One thing can be seen in the picture - or rather,no longerto see. In previous X3D generations, traces of the 3D V cache could be seen under certain lighting conditions, which do not appear in the alleged image of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
- Wccftech sees this as confirmation of the 9550pro leak, so the cache is actually placed below the CCD.
- It also follows that the cache is like a few days agoTechPowerUpsuspected with numerousSilicon viasis provided to connect the CCD to the underlying substrate.
Ryzen 7 9800X3D: The inverted structure allows free overclocking
Let’s turn the clock back a little at this point. On January 5, 2022, AMD presented the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, the first processor with the eponymous 3D V-cache, which would change the gaming landscape in the years that followed.
- At that time, AMD was still comparatively cautious when it came to possible voltages and clock speeds - so there was no option for overclocking the CPU ex works.
- The successor in the form of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D introduced support for “Precision Boost Overdrive”. The AMD feature is (to put it simply) a function for automatic overclocking.
Reports on the next step for the overclocking heart, i.e. a, occurred last July. For a short time, the price comparison search engine Geizhals (viaVideocardz) the Ryzen 7 9800X3D with a free multiplier in the technical data sheet. However, the entry has now been deleted.
Both in the leak at the time and in the premature Geizhals publication, it remained unclear how AMD wanted to introduce the free multiplier on a technical level.
- The inverted structure of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is probably the solution to the puzzle: Since the CCD now has direct contact with the integrated heat spreader (“IHS”), as in the non-X3D processors, AMD can therefore not only increase the power consumption, but also the unlock the usual overclocking options.
