RTX 5090: Leaked price gives hope, but upon closer inspection it raises questions

A new leak suggests a price for the RTX 5090 under $2,000. But the underlying tweet raises questions. (Image source: Pixabay/PublicDomainPictures)

Update from November 21, 2024 at 2:45 p.m.:Further research has shown that the stated price for the RTX 5090 of $1,900 is probably not sustainable. We have therefore adapted the article accordingly.

Many are eagerly awaiting Nvidia's Geforce RTX 5090. Some things have already been leaked about the new flagship. However, one important question has so far remained unanswered: How much will the new top model cost exactly?

To date, the price range has been assumed to be between $1,999 and $2,499. A new leak now specifies a comparatively exact price for the RTX 5090 Founders Edition.

Im Detail:

  • RTX 5090 probably not quite as expensive as initially feared.
  • New leak assumes around 1,900 (presumably 1,899) US dollars.

This means that the RTX 5090 would be $300 more expensive at market launch than the RTX 4090 at the end of 2022. Because the Founders Edition officially cost $1,599 two years ago. In Germany, the flagship of the RTX 40 series was launched for 1,949 euros.

The leak comes from the X accountBits And Chips – Eng, which belongs to the Italian website Bits And Chips.

How credible is the leak?

At first, $1,900 seems quite realistic. It may well be that the RTX 5090 is priced at exactly this price point. But how Bits And Chips came up with 1,900 euros raises questions.

There arean article on the website, which says the RTX 5090 will cost at least 1,800 euros. The author refers to unspecified rumors. And important: The article is from November 18th, just like the tweet on X.

Now the question is whether the author or the creator of the tweet converted from 1,800 euros to dollars, because that actually amounts to just under 1,900 euros (exactly 1,894 euros), or whether the rumors that she refers to are perhaps from 1,900 US dollars and then exchanged them the other way around - that's around 1,800 euros (exactly 1,804 euros).

There in the tweet fromapproximatelyHowever, we are talking about 1,900 euros, but we think the former is more likely.

How realistic is 1,800 euros for the RTX 5090?

1,800 euros would mean that the RTX 5090 enters the market cheaper than was the case with the RTX 4090, which in turn started at 1,949 euros in the form of the Founders Edition.

However, it is much more likely that the new flagship will be more expensive than its predecessor.

The reasons for this are varied:There's inflation, for example. The production of ever larger and/or more densely packed monolithic chips is also becoming more complex and expensive. A lack of competition is also likely to have an unfavorable impact on the end customer price. Nvidia already dominates the high-end segment unchallenged with the RTX 4090.

And that probably won't change any time soon. Because AMD apparently doesn't want to attack the top with the RX 8000 series, but instead wants to take care of other market segments. Nvidia can therefore determine the price for the RTX 5090 relatively freely.

What else is known about the RTX 5090?

Already in September the leakercopy7chemistrymost of the specifications of Nvidia's upcoming flagship mentioned:

  • Chip name: GB202-300-A1
  • CUDA cores: 21,760 (versus 16,384 on the RTX 4090)
  • Graphics memory: 32 GB GDDR7 (512 bit)
  • TBP: 600 watts (versus 450 watts for the RTX 4090)

The base clock speed should also be 2,900 MHz. For comparison: The RTX 4090 has a base clock of 2,235 MHz.

It can therefore be assumed that the RTX 5090 will break the 3 gigahertz mark quite clearly under gaming load - 3,100 to 3,200 MHz are certainly conceivable.

What does that mean for performance?

Around 30 percent more cores and an equally higher base clock suggest that the RTX 5090 in 4K resolution could be at least 30 percent faster than the previous gaming flagship in terms of grid performance.

Improvements to the architecture and the use of the new GDDR7 graphics memory result in further advantages that can have a positive effect on performance.

Popular with GameStar Tech

A noticeable increase in performance can also be expected with ray tracing. In addition, the AI upscaler DLSS in version 4.0 could be reserved for Blackwell graphics cards (RTX 50 series) to make switching to a new model palatable.

When should the RTX 5090 be released?

The RTX 5090 is generally expected to be presented at CES 2025 (January 7th to 11th). The market launch is also planned for early 2025.
