Fantasy series are very trendy among the large streaming providers. Whether Netflix, Disney or Amazon, they all produce sequels and new adaptations of fantastic worlds year after year. But not all of these projects are successful, at least the American author Brandon Sanderson finds.
Sanderson is one of the very big fantasy authors in the English-speaking area. SeineThe Stormlight Archive
- andMistborn
-Romance sold millions of times. After the death of colleague Robert Jordan, Sanderson also completed his romance cycleThe wheel of time
. However, Sanderson has so far been denied a TV adaptation of his works.
Streaming providers find it difficult with fantasy
In an interview with the entertainment magazinePolygonThe author recently responded to the question of why. His answer: Studios and streaming services are not yet ready for this.
The streaming market has a big problem with epic fantasy and that worries me. The rings of power and the wheel of time have not developed as well as I was hoping. After a very strong first season, Shadow and Bone only brought it to two seasons. The providers have simply not yet understood fantasy.
Perhaps this is a remnant from the time of program television, where you try to adapt everything to a cramped episode structure instead of making an eight -hour film and then cutting it into pieces. But maybe that's a bad idea.
I only know that we haven't seen a really great fantasy television since the early seasons of Game of Thrones. Fifty million dollars per episode did not do anything, so it's not about the money they spend on it. Besides, we have not yet seen that one of these programs arrives to the people as I would like it.
Arcane, on the other hand, liked him, says Sanderson. However, this series also cost a lot of money. Their success is also primarily through the brandboosted. Sanderson himself is also working on an animation series on one of his works,Tress of the Emerald Sea
.
Negativbeispiel The Witcher
He would also like to see a real implementation of his Mistborn and Stormlight novels at some point, but recent fantasy adaptations would have increased his doubts in this regard, explains Sanderson.
Because Amazon's rings of power and Netflix 'The Witcher failed spectacularly in his eyes. At least The Witcher would have had the potential to get really great.
With an unlimited budget and unlimited creative control, I could do something really good. But who knows? I mean, the rings of power essentially had it, and yet the series did not become very good. It's okay, but is it what you want?
I think the most important ingredient for such a project is a visionary filmmaker. Epic fantasy reacted badly to too much supervision from above. I think that was the problem of The Witcher. They had this visionary: it was Henry Cavill. And they didn't want to listen to him, but put him in constant talk. And then he was gone.
Fans of rings of power and the bike of the times should not share Sanderson's harsh judgment on their favorite series. At least there is something in his assessment of The Witcher: it was repeatedly reported that Henry Cavill was in the clinch with those responsible for the series because of creative decisions. He was therefore exchanged for Liam Hemsworth for the fourth and fifth season.
