Forgoing fast internet: That's why many Germans don't switch to fiber optics

The whole of Germany should be covered with fiber optics by 2030.According to a surveyAccording to the consulting firm BearingPoint GMBH, there will be less demand for fiber optics than expected by then.

Im Detail:

  • At the end of 2024, around 32 percent of households were able to book fiber optics.
  • However, only 18 percent of households took advantage of this.
  • The difference between availability and usage is expected to increase to around 51 percent by 2030.

There are three main reasons against switching to fiber optics

Over 60 percent of the participants in the study are not planning to change or are unsure.

Three reasons in particular were mentioned by the participants in the study:

  • Satisfaction with the current tariff.
  • High cost of fiber optic and value for money.
  • Lack of information about fiber optics and the added value of the new technology.

Satisfaction with current tariff and costs

The participants in the study were asked about running costs and satisfaction with the internet connection.

Fiber optics performed best in terms of overall satisfaction, followed by DSL and cable internet.

DSL customers had the cheapest access to the Internet. Only slightly more is charged for cable, while fiber optic costs on average 11 percent more than DSL.

Lack of information and advice

In the survey, participants were also asked about the communication measures. It turns out that willingness to change depends heavily on the information provided.

Only 22 percent of participants who did not receive any information planned to switch to fiber optics.

According to the study, willingness to change increases as soon as information is provided. More than half of respondents exposed to advertising and marketing efforts said they wanted to switch to fiber.

According to BearingPoint, improving communication measures could increase willingness to switch to fiber.
