I turned my back on the gym and I am still more fit than ever - thanks to an app

During my entire youth and until my studies, I played football in the club and moved so regularly. Then I had less time for team sport.

In fitness studios, I never endured it long afterwards, which is why over time my fitness continued-in contrast to the numbers on the scales. Sure, they can also rise from muscles, but for me the extra kilos consisted more of pizza and cookies.

A few years ago I discovered the Freeletics fitness app for myself. In the meantime I move regularly and feel fit than ever before. And best of all: I don't even have to leave the house for it.

The advantages and disadvantages at a glance:

Pro

  • Fast and flexible training
  • Personally coordinated units
  • Holistic approach with a focus on legs and fuselage
  • Local unattached

Against

  • No incentive by others
  • No "real" trainers who can help
  • Less muscle building than with weights

This is how Freeletics works

Freeletics is a fitness app that focuses on exercises with your own body weight, such as pushups, sit-ups and the like. There are a number of so-called "Training Journey", ie 6- to 12-week plans with different priorities.

A few examples:

  • "Muscle building without weights" contains 48 training sessions of 30 to 60 minutes each, which mostly rely on high resistance, but hardly set cardio.
  • "Express workout" contains 24 short, but intensive units of 10 to 15 minutes each.
  • "Freeletics Hardcore" is the heaviest journey and offers 35 units for 30 to 120 minutes and a mix of strength and cardio training.

When choosing the journey, what awaits me is clearly shown.

At the beginning you choose one of these journeyys and indicate on which days a week you want to train. The app then calculates a unit for each selected day.

After training, the app feedback is given whether the unit was too light, too heavy or just right, from which the next units are calculated.

Units can also be easily moved or adapted if, for example, you only have a little time or scarce or want to exclude a muscle group.

You can also specify which equipment (e.g. pullup rod, blackroll, boxing etc.) is available. This is then installed in the units.

Freeletics costs so much:The app itself is free, just like many exercises. A subscription is needed for personal coaching. There are three options to choose from here:

  • 3 months: 35 euros
  • 6 months: 60 euros
  • 12 months: 80 euros

Of course there are also other providers such as Gymondo, Kernwerk or Asana Rebel. However, I didn't explicitly try it. Freeletics personally satisfied me directly.

Dank App fit im Home Office

For me, Freeletics is the almost perfect solution. I can easily integrate the training into my daily routine without having to invest too much time or planning. Three times a week I extend my lunch break a bit, do my exercises and did it.

I don't have to go to a gym and am not as busy as with a team sport. If I can't do it or am on vacation, I do a shorter unit or move it to the next day.

An important aspectIn the case of fitness and muscle building, the regularity is and it is much easier for me with the app than before. So I have actually become fitter than ever in the past three years. I now even create a few pull -ups, which used to be almost impossible.

Hurdles:An important point in the app is the discipline. There is no positive "social pressure", for example, by a training partner or a team. But if you need that to get up, Freeletics is probably nothing for you.

In addition, it should also be borne in mind that the units are not created by a human trainer. So you have to control yourself and give honest feedback. Otherwise you may risk injuries due to overload or incorrect remarks.
