Apple users can easily share files with other Apple devices that are nearby. Apple could soon be obliged to release AirDrop and other features for other systems.
This is what happened:The European Union has taken a number of measuresa documentlisted to improve or enable collaboration between Apple devices and systems from other manufacturers.
The suggestions can be roughly divided into two areas:
- Changes to the iOS operating system.
- Making features available that previously only work on Apple devices.
The first area includes the ability to display notifications on smartwatches and third-party devices. In addition, Apple should also enable the functions integrated in iOS for automatically switching audio devices and running in the background for other apps and devices.
AirDrop for everyone
The EU also wants Apple to open up functions such as AirDrop to other manufacturers. This should make it possible to exchange files between Apple devices and devices from other manufacturers.
By opening it up to other systems, files could be exchanged between Android and Apple, or Windows and Apple via AirDrop.
So far it has been necessary to use third-party apps to send files between Apple, Android or Windows.
Apple hatin a statementwarned that the changes could put Apple users' personal data at risk.
There is already a working alternative
Android users have access to two file-sending apps, Samsung Quick Share and Google Nearby Share. In the future it shouldlay. However, both tools do not work with Apple devices.
our editor Duy Linh Dinh presented an alternative that works on all devices.
The open source software is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iPhone. After installation, files can then be easily moved between all devices with your help.
The only disadvantage is that LocalSend must be installed on all devices.
Now you are asked. Do you use AirDrop, LocalSend or other file sharing services? What do you think of the EU's proposal? Feel free to write us a comment.
