The end of the Origin client has come: the launcher will finally be replaced in April

In a few months, EA will completely retire the Origin client.

Electronic Arts will stop official support for Origin in 2022. The game client could still be used, but that too will finally end in a few months. There is then no way around using the EA app. The publisher informs users about the upcoming change with a brief messagethe official website.

Too few bits

The specific end of Origin will be April 17, 2025. After that, you have to use the largely functionally identical EA app, which also includes library and download management, as well as a store and some social functions such as friend lists.

What do users have to do?If you don't yet use the EA app, you must download it now in order to use the purchased games and your own EA Play subscription. You can log in with the same login details as with Origin.

Games that have already been downloaded do not need to be reinstalled, and saved games are transferred automatically. EA only gives no guarantee that mods will continue to work after switching to the EA app.

Why is the client shut down?EA justifies this step with Microsoft's decision not to support 32-bit software in the future. The EA app requires a 64-bit operating system, i.e. the corresponding version of Windows 10 or Windows 11.

However, this also means that from April users of 32-bit operating systems will no longer be able to officially use Electronic Arts games on their own hardware. If you want to access games purchased from EA Origin in the future, you will have to change the operating system.

In the past, it was usually necessary to start EA games using the publisher's launcher even when purchased via other platforms such as Steam. Surprisingly, Dragon Age: The Veilguard made an unusual exception last year and dispensed with the requirement to use the EA app.
